課程概述

Course Description and Requirements:

A survey course like this one frequently attempts to accomplish too many things in too little time. So that our time is used smartly, read the assignments ahead of schedule and be prepared to participate in class discussions. To ensure that you are adequately prepared for each class, I will regularly give short, unannounced quizzes. These quizzes will cover both the introductory essays and selections from the NAAL. Be sure to read the very helpful introductory essays and notes that come with each

課程目標
There will be two examinations: an optional midterm plus a final. In lieu of the midterm, you can choose to write a short (no more than 5 typed, double-spaced pages) paper. The final exam will cover ALL materials taught during the semester. Each exam is worth 45% of the course grade; the remaining 10% goes to quizzes and oral presentations. Attendance, enthusiasm, and active participation in class discussions are all expected though none counts toward the course grade. Classes will be conducted in Mandarin; the required oral presentations may be done in Mandarin or in English. An outrageous absence record, plagiarism, or other forms of academic dishonesty will result in a failing grade and appropriate disciplinary action.

Oral Presentation Topics:

Regardless of which topic below that suits you, you must first ponder the two questions for the millenium:

--Why am I studying American Literature in Taiwan in the year 2000?
--How can I benefit from what I learn in American Literature to better compete in the 21 century?

Now survey the following oral presentation topics:

1. When did American literature begin?
2. Who were the Puritans?
3. The Maypole of Merrymount: two perspectives.
4. The woman narrator: Rowlandson's multiple voices.
5. The Indian encounter: friend or foe?
6. Typology: the Puritan reads the wor(l)d.
7. Language, logic, and Truth: Edward Taylor's dilemma.
8. The beginning of an American tradition in literature.
9. Your choice (must be approved).

Record your oral presentation or short paper topic below:
